In Marathi, the main meaning of the word 'Dadar'
is ‘staircase ' or 'ladder'. The history of the name 'Dadar’, a
famous suburb of Mumbai, is also linked to this meaning.
The interesting history of the name and meaning of the Dadar
area of Mumbai is as
follows:
- Staircase
or ladder: In Marathi, 'Dadar' means staircase. In the old days, there
were stone steps or staircase-like structures (Dadar) connecting Mahim
Island and Parel Island for ascending and descending in the bay area, from
which the area got its name.
- Bridge
or causeway: According to some historians, the stone causeways
connecting the old islands or the bridges built for traffic were called
'Dadar'.
- Origin
of the station (1868): When the railway station was built here in
1868, it was a link connecting the two main parts (Old Bombay and the
suburbs). The station was considered the main gateway for travel from both
sides.
- Culture of the Koli brothers: In the local Koli Agri language and also in the terminology of the villagers, such constructions outside the village or on the banks of the creek were called 'Dadar'.
Today, Dadar is no longer just a 'staircase or bridge' but has become the main cultural, political, railway and Public Speaking heart of Mumbai at Dadar Toastmasters Club.
